He’s only 9 years old, but it feels like we’ve known him forever. And yet, it feels like we don’t know him at all. Prince George, the elusive future king, third in line to the throne. Oldest child of Kate Middleton and Prince William.

We know he was born on July 22, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in London. We know he is big brother to Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. This is what we know for sure. But there is more to be discovered about Prince George, the future head of the British monarchy. Defender of the Faith, protector of the realm. Like all of us, he is more than just his title. So let’s get to know Prince George Alexander Louis.

Prince George was meant to be given a different name, if his mom Kate Middleton had been given her way on the subject. Middleton reportedly had her heart set on the name Alexander, which would have made her son the first King Alexander to ever sit on the throne. Alas, this was not meant to be.

Now nine years later, it’s impossible to imagine Prince George as anything other than exactly that. Almost as impossible as it is to imagine a world where we aren’t all captivated by Prince George himself. Read on for the most fascinating facts about Prince George and big milestones he’s marked so far.

Look Who’s 9!

Kate Middleton and Prince William celebrated their oldest son’s ninth birthday in July with a brand new photo on Instagram. As is often the case, Prince George sported a polo shirt for his picture and stood looking all casual and happy, smiling on the beach.

Even as younger siblings Princess Charlotte got nervous and Prince Louis became a meme, Prince George maintained regal composure at his great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in June 2022. It’s all part of the job when you’re slated to become King one day.

He’s Not Holding Hands Anymore

Prince George joined his parents and his little sister Princess Charlotte for his very first church service on Easter Sunday at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle in April 2022. What’s more, for what appeared to be pretty much the first time ever, he wasn’t holding his mom’s hand. Or his dad’s hand. Or even his little sister’s hand. It seemed like a sign of more mature times to come for the suddenly grown-up future king, a sign that he is becoming his own person with his own role. Or he just said no when someone tried to hold his hand. Either way, we’re not ready.

He’s Been To His First Memorial Service

It’s rather a sad rite of passage, but an important step in the grieving process. Prince George attended what was presumably his very first memorial service in honor of his great-grandfather Prince Philip in March. He and Princess Charlotte joined their parents at Westminster Abbey to pay their respects to the Duke of Edinburgh, and Prince George looked incredibly grown up for the big occasion.

Already a classy little guy, apparently.

He Has A Hilarious Nickname

Prince William and Kate Middleton apparently call Prince George “Tips,” and there’s a reason for this bizarre little nickname. It’s because Prince George is shortened to PG, and there’s a brand of tea called PG Tips. So now he’s just Tips to his parents, which is kind of cute once you get the explanation out of the way.

He Loves A Snake

When Prince William visited the Ulster Museum last year, he had the chance to get up close and personal with a huge live snake. Instead of recoiling in fear, he admitted “George is obsessed with snakes, he’s going to be so upset that he missed this.” Perhaps he’ll get a pet snake for his growing animal collection at Anmer Hall.

He Does Farm Chores

Kate Middleton and Prince William spend a lot of time with their kids at their country home of Anmer Hall, where Prince George and his younger sibling are expected to do farm chores to help care for the many animals they acquired during Covid-19 lockdown. His mom told a farmer in Wales during a royal outing that her oldest son’s chore was to move feed for the animals. Because being a future king doesn’t get you out of chores, apparently.

He Doesn’t Have An Elf On The Shelf

Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

There’s one thing the future King of England doesn’t get to enjoy, and that’s Elf on the Shelf. During a Christmas time question and answer period with children, Prince William was asked about Elf on the Shelf and admitted, “I don’t know what Elf on the Shelf is.” So bad news for Prince George. Or good news, depending.

He Likes A Morning Dance Party

Prince William opened up about a certain morning routine his family enjoys on an episode of Apple Fitness+ Time To Walk, and it seems Prince George is not above a little dance party. As long as he’s the one choosing the music. “Most mornings there’s a massive fight between George and Charlotte as to what song is played,” he said at the time. “And I have to, now, basically prioritize that one day someone does this one and another day it’s someone else’s turn. So George gets his go, then Charlotte gets her go. Such is the clamor for the music.”

He’s Been To The World Cup

We already knew he was a soccer fan, but now we know he supports England pretty passionately. The summer of 2021 saw Prince George attend the World Cup, and his reactions to the game went viral simply because he was so excited. Also he wore a suit and tie which was quite adorable.

He’s Not A Fan Of A Litterbug

Prince George joined his classmates for a neighborhood clean-up session in October, and his dad Prince William said he was very “annoyed” by litter bugs who kept making a mess in the street. “They went out litter picking one day and then the very next day they did the same route, same time and pretty much all the same litter they picked up back again,’ Prince William told the BBC at the time. Presumably Prince George will enjoy a nice tidy monarchy.

He Lived In Wales

Kate Middleton and Prince George lived in Anglesey, Wales, when Prince William was working as a helicopter pilot in the Royal Air Force in 2013. The Duchess of Cambridge spoke about her time as a young mom in 2020 during a visit to an early years center in Wales. “It was the first year and I’d just had George,” she said at the time, per People. “William was still working with Search and Rescue, and we came up here and I had a tiny, tiny baby in the middle of Anglesey. It was so isolated, so cut off. I didn’t have any family around, and he was doing night shifts.”

He Has Seven Godparents

Prince George will never have to look too far for godparents; he’s got seven of them. Kate Middleton and Prince William chose Earl Grosvenor, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Julia Samuel, Zara Tindall, William van Cutsem, Emilia Jardine-Paterson, and Oliver Baker to be in charge of their son’s religious education. I guess they can take turns.

He Made History As A Cover Baby

Prince George was the first baby to appear on the cover of ‘Vanity Fair.’

In 2014, Prince George made history as the first baby to appear on the cover of Vanity Fair in honor of his first birthday. It was, of course, the first cover of many.

He’s Pretty Chill About Meeting Presidents

A lot of people might get nervous meeting the president of the United States. Not Prince George. Not only did he show up to a meeting with President Barack Obama in his robe at Kensington Palace in 2016, he also had the president crouching down to meet him on his level.

He’s A Hand-Me-Down Prince

He might be worth around $3.6 billion, but he’s not blowing his money on clothes. Prince George has frequently been seen wearing hand-me-downs from his own dad and even his uncle Prince Harry, because he’s a thrifty future king.

He Has A Celebrity Toy Collection

A lapis lazuli orb from Pope Francis. A rocking horse from the Obamas. A Cleveland Cavaliers jersey from LeBron James. Prince George has a treasure trove of gifts from celebrities.

He Calls Her Majesty “Gan-Gan”

If you ever meet Queen Elizabeth II, you have to call her “Your Majesty.” When it comes to her great-grandson, however, things are a bit more relaxed. Kate Middleton said in 2016 that Prince George calls her “Gan-Gan,” and that she “always leaves a little gift or something in their room when we go and stay and that just shows her love for her family,” per Hello!.

He Writes To Santa

And his dad hand delivers the message. In 2017, Prince William was visiting Helsinki, Finland and gave Santa Claus a letter from Prince George with only one request: a police car. I guess he’s been given so many gifts from celebrities that he didn’t need much.

He Loves A Tractor Moment

Prince William once said his oldest son is “obsessed” with tractors, and it’s rather difficult to imagine the future king out there riding one around Kensington Palace.

He Wants To Be A Pilot Like His Dad

Kate Middleton met with air cadets in 2016 and told them that her 3-year-old son is “now obsessed with the air cadets and wants to join.” Considering his father, Prince William, was also a pilot, this seems like a pretty solid side gig for the future king.

He’s Learning Ballet

Prince George is taking ballet lessons at Thomas’s Battersea, his school in London, so prepare yourselves for an elegant king.

He’s Generous With Compliments

Prince George gives good compliments.

In 2019, Kate Middleton created a “Back to Nature” garden experience for the Chelsea Flower Show. Prince William asked Prince George what he would “give it out of 10,” and the happy little boy said, “20!” His mom looked so pleased.

He’s A Conservationist

Prince George is worried about the planet.

Much like his father, Prince William, and grandfather Prince Charles, Prince George is worried about the future of the planet. William told Sir David Attenborough in an interview in 2020 that his son loved to watch nature documentaries until they got to one about animal extinction. "He said to me 'you know I don't want to watch this anymore.'" What a caring little character.

He Loves “Granny Diana”

Prince George loves his “Granny Diana.”

For Mother’s Day 2021, Prince George made a special card for his “Granny Diana,” the late Princess Diana, complete with a sweet message that read, “Happy happy Mother’s Day. I love you very much and think of you always. George xxxxx.”

He’s A Fan Of Baking

Prince George helped make the Christmas pudding.

In 2019, Prince George helped bake the traditional Christmas pudding with Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, and Prince William. He seemed to be pretty comfortable, perhaps because his mom, Kate Middleton, admitted that he is a fan of baking (as evidenced by the cake he helped bake for Mother’s Day 2021).

He’s An Avid Football Fan

Prince George charmed everyone at a football game in 2020 when he could barely contain his enthusiasm for his favorite team, Aston Villa. His dad even thinks he would be “brilliant” if he played for the team some day.

He’s Competitive With His Siblings

Prince George, like pretty much all children, can be a bit competitive with his siblings. His mom noted in a 2020 interview that Prince George was “grumpy” because his little brother Prince Louis’ sunflower was growing faster than his. As for Princess Charlotte, Middleton said that her son would rather be doing his little sister’s homework than his own since it was more fun. Typical.

He Gets Muddy In The Garden

Prince George gets muddy in the garden.

When Prince George visits his grandma Carole Middleton, he gets down in the dirt with her. She said in a recent interview that she likes her grandkids to get “muddy,” and the future king does always seem happiest outdoors in family photos.

He Has The Volunteer Spirit

Prince George joined his dad delivering food.

He might be young, but already Prince George is getting into the volunteer spirit. He joined dad Prince William in 2020 to deliver food to isolated pensioners in Sandringham, and earlier he joined the rest of the United Kingdom in clapping for carers.

A kind, thoughtful king is already being made.

He Went For Carriage Rides With Prince Philip

Prince Philip was rather famous for his carriage driving when he was alive, and one of his little passengers was frequently Prince George. When the Duke of Edinburgh died in April 2021, Prince William remembered in a statement on Instagram, “I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humor!”

He Worries About The War In Ukraine

During a recent visit to Ukrainian community members living in London, Prince William said that his kids were talking about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and had questions about what was going on. “Ours have been coming home asking all about it," Prince William said at the event. "They are obviously talking about it with their friends at school.” He admitted he’s trying to “choose his words carefully” when discussing with his kids.

He Was A Big Baby

When Prince George was born at St. Mary’s Hospital, he weighed in at 8 pounds, 3 ounces. While his little brother Prince Louis, born in April 2018, outweighed him by 1 pound, he was still bigger than the national average of 7 pounds, 8 ounces.

Looking Cool At Wimbledon

The Cambridges have started bringing their oldest son to a few royal outings on his own as future king, like when he hung out in the royal box at Wimbledon in July. Looking so grown up, and also yes a bit sweaty, in his suit.
