Two Moms Launch A Site That Specializes In Perfect Family Outdoor Gear For All Seasons

Salt + Snow is a one-stop-shop for your next family adventure (even if it’s a simple trip to the pool).

If you’ve ever clicked through pages and pages of swimsuits or rain jackets without finding anything that works for yourself or your kids or wandered endless aisles of soccer cleats under the florescent light of a massive, uninviting big-box store, then you know what drove outdoor-enthusiasts and mothers Kathy Thomas and Sara Zilkha to start the E-commerce platform, Salt + Snow this spring.

“Salt + Snow was created to give you back the time you spend with 20 tabs open trying to outfit yourself and your family for outdoor adventures,” Thomas tells Romper. “It’s created for women who like to look good and feel good in their outdoor apparel — you often have to choose one or the other.”

One of the annoying-but-true facts of life is that anything from a beach day to a family camping trip (godspeed) or a simple hike is so much easier (and more enjoyable) when you have the right gear. The number of people participating in outdoor recreation went way up in the last few years, research shows, and as many of 20% of those people may be new to exploring the great outdoors. But whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting to embrace your outdoorsy side, finding gear, clothing, and equipment that is both comfortable and functional (and maybe even nice to look at) takes time and effort.

Salt + Snow curates a select mix of must-have gear and chic accessories for kids and adults from brands you’re likely familiar with (like Cynthia Rowley or Eugenia Kim), and more under-the-radar brands you may be encountering for the first time.

With 9 kids between them, ranging in age from 19 to 5 years old, Zilkha and Thomas understand the importance of not wasting time and energy. “We’ve become the place where you can get that toddler rash guard, the tween’s sweatshirt, and mom’s sun hat,” Zilkha tells Romper, adding that the site is curated to avoid decision-fatigue.

And you know what they say: if you have the gear, the adventures will come (or something like that). “[My kids] may not remember all of it,” Thomas says of the myriad of outdoor activities she does with her family, “but I do.”
