At least 19 children and two adults have been confirmed dead after a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, law enforcement said late Tuesday. The suspected shooter is also deceased, according to authorities.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District said in a Facebook post that an active shooter was reported at the elementary school, which has students in second, third, and fourth grade and is located roughly 80 miles from San Antonio. Students and staff had two days left before summer break.

Several children were transported to Uvalde Memorial Hospital via ambulance or bus. “Two children have been transferred to San Antonio and one child is pending transfer,” the hospital said in a Facebook post. “Two individuals that arrived at UMH were deceased.”

University Hospital in San Antonio said on Twitter that it is treating two patients in critical condition: a 66-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl. Names and ages of the victims have not been released.

The massacre at Robb Elementary School was the deadliest school shooting in the state’s history, according to the Associated Press. Tuesday’s attack is the 27th school shooting this year, according to Education Week’s 2022 School Shooting Tracker.

“What happened in Uvalde is a horrific tragedy that cannot be tolerated in the state of Texas,” Gov. Abbott said in a press conference. “[The gunman] shot and killed — horrifically, incomprehensibly — 14 students and killed a teacher... When parents drop their kids off at school, they have every expectation to know that they’ll be able to pick their child up when that school day ends. There are families that are in mourning right now.”

The horrific shooting in Texas comes 10 days after a gunman acted in “racially motivated violent extremism” and killed 10 people in a mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York on May 14.

Seventeen students and staff members were killed in the Parkland school shooting on Feb. 14, 2018. On Dec. 14, 2012, a gunman killed 26 people, including 20 first-graders, at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Tuesday’s shooting in Texas is the deadliest elementary school shooting since Sandy Hook, according to The New York Times.

Fred Guttenberg, who lost his daughter Jaime Guttenberg in the Parkland school shooting, expressed anger and frustration with lawmakers while speaking MSNBC after the elementary school shooting in Texas. “I’m done. They f*cking failed our kids again, I’m done. I’ve had it. How many more times are we gonna sit back?”

President Joe Biden addressed the nation on Tuesday evening from the White House and urged lawmakers to pass stricter gun prevention laws. “We as a nation have to ask when in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby,” Biden said. “When in God’s name do we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done?”
