The Truth About Egg Whites & Your Fertility

by Olivia Youngs

If you're trying to get pregnant, chances are you've researched just about every method for conceiving out there, from the well-known to the downright strange. You might have heard about using a common household staple — egg whites — as an aid to help you in your pregnancy endeavors, but more than likely, you're a little bit skeptical to try it out. After all, egg whites can be a good hair mask and food source for clean eaters. But if you're asking "can egg whites help me get pregnant" you might think you've gone to far. However, it's not as crazy of an idea as you might think.

Egg whites have long been lauded for their "lubricating abilities." Obviously, they have a similar consistency to lube and it makes sense (sort of) that they might be a safe, effective alternative to conventional lubricants. And, as it turns out, there is some scientific backing to the claim. According to Baby Hopes, a natural fertility and conception website, many women claim that using egg whites as a lube during sex helped them conceive over every other method they'd tried. The site noted that, although there is no guarantee that you'll conceive with the method, egg whites create a "sperm friendly environment" because it acts like vaginal mucus and helps push the sperm to where they need to be without damaging them.

The Bump noted that some lubes aren't sperm-friendly and can damage them and yield them ineffective. Although there are sperm friendly lubes you can purchase, many opt for the all natural, chemical-free option: egg whites. Not only are egg whites a safe alternative to other lubes, Parents noted that egg white are likely just as effective as anything else would be.

Do you think this method could be for you? Baby Hopes gave a few tips for using egg whites as lube. First, you'll need to track your ovulation to make sure you're actually fertile on the day you're planning to have sex. Then, plan ahead a bit by setting the egg out on the counter so it can reach room temperature before you actually put it inside you (Freezing lube? No thank you.) From there, crack the egg and separate the white from the yoke. Once you've separated it, you've got to be ready to go since letting the egg sit out can cause bacteria to grow. Simply insert it like you would any other lube and you're ready to get down to business.

It sounds a little bit "crunchy" and out there, but it's worth a shot if it can mean the difference between a pregnancy or no pregnancy.
