La’Porsha Renae 'Battles' Lyrics Prove Why She Should Be The Final American Idol

by Kaitlin Kimont

After listening to American Idol contestant La’Porsha Renae sing the lyrics to her single “Battles”, goosebumps raced down my body as I nodded with an agreeable “mmhmm.” It’s truly hard not to relate to every lyric in this song. It’s a moving ballad with a strong message to both men and women, as well as a poignant description of a single mom’s journey.

In addition to the moving lyrics, Renae’s sultry voice drives the message home that we’ve all had our own struggles in life, but we’re capable of finding the personal strength inside to overcome them. "Your dreams won’t be that far," she sings, so long as you keep fighting. Of course, the final American Idol will be crowned tonight and after Renae stunned viewers over the course of this Farewell Season, those dreams may not be so far away anymore.

The age-old saying, “life is a journey” is written all over Renae’s “Battles.” Life is filled with lessons, hardships, joys, and heartaches — but all of these moments will ultimately lead us to our purpose in life. The singer should know — Renae’s road to American Idol wasn’t a smooth one. In fact, she’s encountered many challenges and struggles at the young age of 22.

Renae, the mother of an oh-so-cute 1-year-old daughter, hails from McComb, Mississippi where she worked as a call center representative. She says she is a survivor of domestic abuse and sought refuge at a women’s shelter. Recently, Renae opened up about her past during an interview with WDAM, explaining how her decision to leave her ex-husband was a difficult one.

“All I can do is look at my daughter and say ‘Wow! You almost lost me and was left with this monster’,” she said in a February interview. “I thought I was having strength by staying when in reality it took me strength to leave.”

The successes under Renae's belt are proof that single moms can do anything, and the lyrics in “Battles” completely connect with her journey to the top of American Idol and how she feels about it all.

“I just want her to be proud. And I wanted to provide the best life I could for her,” she said in the same interview with WDAM, speaking of her 1-year-old daughter. “I really do think that getting the golden ticket to American Idol it’s just the start of something really great.”

Renae is a favorite to win the last ever American Idol title tonight. Kelly Clarkson, the first winner of American Idol, even revealed recently that she hoped Renae would win. "I have never voted for anyone on American Idol, not even for myself," Clarkson tweeted on Wednesday. "But I will be voting for @laporsharenae tonight. I need her future record!"

Renae’s past is sadly far too common in this world today, but Renae has a recognizably powerful fight and positive spirit in her that have helped her battle all those ups and downs. Thankfully for us, her song "Battles" puts it all into perspective to one seriously powerful tune.
