Reactions To The New Emojis Prove People Are Excited & Definitely Hungry

by Marina Lopes

Anyone who has found themselves at a loss for words while texting knows that the emoji selection on smartphones is extremely limited. Unless you are painting your nails, dancing the tango or have a lot to say about eggplants, emojis leave a lot to be desired. So it's no surprise socially awkward people around the world rejoiced when 72 new emojis were released on Tuesday. This week's Unicode update included a facepalm, pregnant woman, an avocado and a gorilla. The internet responded with all of the emotions, but the reactions to the new emojis show that most of all, people are hungry.

A whopping 18 of the new emojis are food-related. Cooking up some paella? There's an emoji for that. Enjoying a nice kiwi? They've got you covered. Feel like you're going to puke? There's one for that too.

But there's one emoji you won't see: Taking into account gun violence in the United States and after being petitioned by Apple, Unicode, which designs the emojis, decided to exclude a rifle.

So how do people feel about the new emojis in town and how is social media responding to the latest update (other than with pure glee and awkward text conversations)? At least one food-related emoji stole the spotlight, but it wasn't alone.

Now The Question We've All Been Asking...

You can bet that there will likely be a few.

"Faces, hand gestures, gender pairings, animals, food, drinks, and sports are all covered in this update," Emojipedia wrote in a post on Tuesday. "... [The] pregnant woman, intended to complete the family emoji set." According to A Plus, the fun times don't stop there either — Apple itself decided to go big or go home with the update.

"You know, sometimes you've typed a whole message and you realize at the end that you're entirely lacking in emojification. So we provided the solution," Craig Federighi, senior vice president for software engineering at Apple said during the recent Apple Worldwide Developers Conference on June 13. "When you tap on the emoji button, we'll highlight all the emojifiable words there, and you can just tap, tap, tap, tap and emojify."

Just when you thought texting without words had become simple (and fun) enough.

The 72 new emojis are sure to please basically everyone (almost), no matter how much they protest that "Humans are getting lazier." (We know you love that little pizza emoji, don't deny it) ... Happy texting!
