7 Things That Happen To Your Vagina After Sex

by Autumn Jones

All the good feels, body shivers, and explosions during sex take your body on a blissful ride. But once the party's over you're vagina may need a few minutes to hit the reset button. If you don't know what happens to your vagina after sex, you'll feel more connected to your body after learning the facts.

You already knew the vagina was super amazing (I mean, what other body part that can provide a passage from the womb to the world?) and it continues to be full of surprises. Because even when sex is over, there is still some action going on down there.

Most women want to know their vagina is healthy, and tend to fret when something feels off. The good news is most vaginal changes after sex are things you won't feel or realize are happening. There are, however, a few post-sex occurrences that may cause concern, shock, or discomfort for you making you question if all is well down there. Although it's likely that these differences are only temporary, be sure to call your health care provider when any changes in your vagina cause you to worry. To figure out what your body's experiencing after getting busy, learn what's behind these seven common after sex vaginal changes.

1

It Plumps Up

After the deed is done, the vagina gets bigger — temporarily. It's possible you won't even realize this, unless you feel a pesky burning sensation when you pee. According to Prevention magazine, because there is engorgement of vaginal tissue, peeing could cause you to feel a stringing or burning sensation soon after sex. Most likely this will subside after a few minutes, but if it doesn't be sure to call your doctor.

2

It Feels Itchy

Can't fight the urge to scratch down there after a romp? There could be a few causes. Feeling itchiness in your vagina after sex likely means you're reacting to lubes or condoms or all that friction caused irritation, as Glamour magazine explained.

3

It's Color Changes

While you're getting it on, the skin can become flushed and even a shade or so darker. But after the show's over, the vagina returns to its normal color, according to Women's Health Matters, from Women's College Hospital.

4

It May Bleed A Little

It may be shocking to find you're bleeding from sex, but it's actually very common. As Mayo Clinic pointed out, most of the time vaginal bleeding after sex is harmless. However, if the bleeding bothers or concerns you, you should make an appointment with your doctor.

5

It's Stonger

That raised heart rate you experience when getting busy does more than just make you break a sweat — you're giving your lady parts a mini-bootcamp. According to Women's Day magazine, sex is a workout for the genitals and strengthens the vaginal muscles, much like doing Kegels.

6

It Feels Heavy

In a perfect world, you should be orgasming every time you have sex, but there are those days when you just can't seem to reach the finish line. And on those days, more than your expectations feel heavy. According to DIan Kerner, Ph.D., a certified sex therapist who told In an interview withWomen's Health magazine, certified sex therapist Dr. Ian Kerner said that, "like their male counterparts, women can experience pelvic heaviness and aching if they do not reach orgasm."

7

It Returns To Your Normal

The vagina is designed like an elastic band, and can expand and contract as needed, but always regains it's original shape. No matter how much it relaxes during sex, the vagina always returns to its regular tightness, according to Cosmopolitan magazine.
