What Should Your Baby Wear To Sleep In The Winter?

by Lindsay E. Mack

When the temperatures drop in the winter time, you're probably tempted to send your baby off to dreamland in a parka and snow boots. After all, the idea of your baby getting cold in the middle of the night is the worst. So what should your baby wear to sleep in the winter? Despite what you think, you probably don't t need to swaddle him in 15 blankets just yet.

In fact, your baby may be more comfortable in temps that feel a bit cool to you. According to the Baby Sleep Site, infants are most comfortable sleeping in a room that's around 68 degrees Fahrenheit, which may feel a bit chilly for most adults. Although it may sound counterintuitive, chances are you're at a greater risk of dressing your little one too warmly for bedtime.

That said, you can still help your baby bundle up for the long winter night. As noted in Baby Center, footed onesies are a good choice for winter sleeping and you can always add a bodysuit for greater layering. Of course, baby pajamas are not your only choice. As explained in Parents, using a sleep sack for your little one is a good call because it is safer than a regular blanket, which may increase the risk of SIDS. Also, it goes without saying that babies wrapped up in sleep sacks are extra-adorable. Lastly, if you're a co-sleeper, keep in mind that your baby will receive your body heat and thus require fewer layers, as noted by Parenting. In this case, a light swaddling cloth may be all the extra warmth she requires.

Your home's temperature, your baby's clothes, and even your little one's personal temperature preferences introduce a lot of variables into the winter baby equation. With this in mind, there are a few steps you can take to make sure your child is comfortable at night. For instance, you may check your little one's back or belly at night to get a gauge of his temperature, according to Everyday Family. If he feels cool to the touch, you may want to add another layer, but if he's sweating a bit, then it's time to dress him in something cooler. With just a bit of trial and error, however, both you and your little one will get through the winter weather in cozy comfort.
