There's More To This 'ASOUE' Mystery Than Expected

by Zakiya Jamal

(Warning: this post contains unfortunate spoilers from Episode 7.) A Series of Unfortunate Events is not only filled with various unfortunate events, but also plenty of twists. At the end of the first episode of the season, fans saw what many assumed were the Baudelaire parents, attempting to escape so they could get back home to their children. This, in it of itself, was already a twist because the Baudelaire children believed their parents were dead. However, it turned out that was only part one of that twist because the parents weren't who we thought they were. So who are Mother and Father on A Series of Unfortunate Events? If you read the book series you probably have some idea.

Throughout the first seven episodes, fans watched as Mother and Father made their way to their children, sometimes even coming very close to the Baudelaires. However, it wasn't Violet, Klaus, and Sunny that Mother and Father were actually trying to make it back home to. Instead, it was a set of different children, whom Mother called out to (Duncan, Isadora, and Quigley) when they returned home. These three children weren't brought up at all in the series until earlier in Episode 7. And even then, they felt like random props in one of Lemony Snicket's narrating stories. But that apparently wasn't the case at all. This was a little tease to the twist that was to come.

If you read the books, you probably know that Duncan, Isadora, and Quigley are the Quagmire triplets, making the Mother and Father characters Mr. and Mrs. Quagmire. Mother and Father were in the same secret organization that the Baudelaire parents were in and based on the conversations they had while on their adventures, it's clear their children were also kept in the dark about what their parents actually do for a living.

While it's great that Mother and Father were able to return home to their children, it reopens the question of whether or not the Baudelaire parents are really dead or not. Did they really die in the house fire after all or could something else have happened to them? With Mother and Father revealed as Mr. and Mrs. Quagmire, it seems that the Baudelaire children are truly orphans, which I suppose we should've all expected. Lemony Snicket did tell us this would not be a joyful story with a happy ending. Still, I couldn't help but hope Violet, Klaus, and Sunny would be rescued by the parents in the end. Sadly, this wasn't the case.
