Science Explains Why Your Vagina Can Get Dry After Sex

by Lindsay E. Mack

Feeling parched after sex is not a pleasant sensation. This is doubly true when that feeling occurs in the nether regions. When this happens, you're left wondering why is my vagina dry after sex. There are a few possible causes.

If the dryness occurs only after sex, then something about the act is likely causing this irritation. For instance, an allergy to latex may cause the vaginal tissue to get drier after contact, according to Health Communities. This feeling is often accompanied by hives and itchiness. Switching to polyurethane condoms, or a different method of birth control altogether, may help the situation. Of course, if the dryness or any other symptoms are particularly severe, then don't hesitate to visit your doctor at once.

A reaction to other aspects of sex could result in dryness as well. In a slightly ironic twist, some people experience vaginal dryness as an allergic reaction to lubricant, according to Gurl. (Can't win for losing, right?) It may help to check out everything that gets used during your sex play, from toys to lubes, for a possible allergy or skin sensitivity. By using the process of elimination, you might find the dryness culprit on your own.

It's also important to remember that vaginal dryness has a ton of potential causes in general. Maybe you just notice it more after intercourse, when natural lubrication would have been the most useful. At any rate, anything from medication side effects to anxiety can make vaginal dryness more likely, according to Everyday Health. Simply taking some allergy meds can cause things to dry up all over your body sometimes. If you're racking your brain for a cause, consider reaching out to a doctor for more guidance.

Lastly, a person could experience post-sex dryness from a simple lack of arousal. If symptoms of allergies or other irritations do not seem to be the cause, it may mean that you and your SO need to take things a little more slowly so your body can play catch-up. (Hey, there's no harm in trying.) Whatever the case, hopefully you will not have to deal with dryness down there for too long.
